About the Library

JD Library was established in 1893 along with the Papal Seminary at Kandy, Sri Lanka, and was later shifted to Pune in 1955.
Jnana Deepa is the name of the Pontifical Athenaeum (Institute) in Pune. It traces its origins to 1893, when Pope Leo XIII founded the Papal Seminary and entrusted its administration to the Society of Jesus.

The programs offered provide a wide range of courses in Philosophy, Religion, and Social Sciences, with special emphasis on Indian philosophical and religious traditions.

JD Library is one of the finest Philosophy and Theology libraries in South Asia, housing:

  • Around 113,000 books
  • Nearly 25,000 volumes of bound periodicals
  • Numerous E-books and E-journals
  • It subscribes to about 200 current journals and weeklies, and provides access to digital resources from:ATLA (American Theological Library Association), Bloomsbury, EBSCO, De Gruyter, JSTOR

The collection is primarily in English, with some materials in Indian vernacular and foreign languages. The library also holds valuable multi-volume encyclopaedias, Bible commentaries, and rare books, including palm-leaf manuscripts dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Jnana Deepa Digital Library seeks to preserve these priceless resources by creating digital copies and making them accessible to faculty and students.
